Fuck ya- Mos Def (or I guess I should now say- Yasiin Bey…but really man, I can’t call you that) and Talib Kweli have teamed up for a long awaited reunion. Rumor has it that they will be coming out with a new album called Black Star Aretha sometime in 2012. “You Already Knew” was produced by Oh No, Madlib’s younger brother- Madlib had produced Black Star’s first single “Fix Up” which was released on Black Friday… mad love for Stones Throw label. Stoked on this collaboration.
Kendrick Lamar is killin it right now, definitely one of my favorite upcoming hip-hop artists. This remix to Rigamortis featuring Busta is so fresh, these two together is pure genius. I can never keep up with Busta, this guy rap insanely fast- although Kendrick is a fair match. Jam of the day.
Gonjasufi is definitely a bizarre artist with such an odd voice but I really dig his stuff. No doubt it’s cool that he’s from my hometown of San Diego. I would describe is music as grimy, squawking, muzzled voice with a hallucinogenic melody. Bizarre character for sure. His mini-LP MU.ZZ.LE will be released via Wrap.
I’ve always loved this San Francisco band, “So Cold” is an unreleased b-sidefrom Dodos… and man is it good. They will be music guest on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on November 29 I’ve yet to see them live but I know they played Sezio’s Four Day Weekend last year and heard nothing but good things about them. Excited to see what these guys do next. U
Holy Ghost! - I Wanted to Tell Her (Ministry cover) [ft. Nancy Whang and the Juan MacLean]
Sooooo my jam right now. These two Brooklyn guys of Holy Ghost! know how to make a solid cover of 80’s sensation “I Wanted to Tell Her” by Ministry, especially with the likes of Nancy Whang from LCD Soundsystem and Juan MacLean. Seriously everything these guys do is incredible, always impressed. Full of industrial synth and psyched out beats and definitely true to the original.
It doesn’t surprise me that Diplo got his hands onto this track… gotta say his remix is way better than the original. There’s something about Diplo’s style that is so engaging making “Dumbin” catchier, more complex, and sexier layered with his signature beats. He never seems to disappoint with a remix. Released by Green Label Sound.
Oh man these guys are great, by far my favorite band to come from San Diego. When I use to work at The Coffee Cup in La Jolla a couple years they would come in all the time. All of them having such awesome personalities… just a cool bunch of guys. I got to know their music from an old friend of mine Zack when they played 2 Years of Sezio in 2010… infatuated with their sound. I just recently saw them again in San Diego for Sezio’s Four Day Weekend. Again blowing me away. These guys are making moves, watch out.
Oh Summer daze… I couldn’t picture any song better for the summer… a true San Diego band straight from the North Country. The Band consists of vocalist/lead guitarist Lincoln Ballif, his brother John Ballif on keyboards/guitar and Grant Nassif on drums. Their debut EP Roar was released April 12 2011 via Autumn Tone Records. I had seen them with my very good friend Katie Freedle at Tin Can Ale House last winter. Oh did I mention they are just finishing up High School. Yup. Radical.
I’m in a summer phase, maybe because I’m stuck in the middle of nowhere and the only thing that surrounds me is endless desert… I’m living vicariously through this music and trying to picture myself back at a beach again. Anyways these guys are straight out of Melbourne, Australia. “Coast to Coast” brings a nostalgic affect with it’s yearning lyrics. Getting lost in time. Twerps’ self-titled record is out now on Chapter/Underwater Peoples.
Alex Winston released her EP titled Velvet Elvis in September. Pop, feel good, dancing around like a silly little girl. That’s what I think. And it’s chill she sings about Elvis. Who could have a problem with that right?!
I’ve liked Class Actress for a while now even if my dad told me it sounded way too 80’s. and ya it does but I still love Elizabeth Harper. Journal Of Ardency was one of my favorite albums 2 summers ago. And now she will be coming out with a new album titled Rapprocher out October. So much synth. so 80’s right now.
